A really enjoyable afternoon in the most beautiful, sunny weather. England at its best!<br />
<br />
Some of the views on the way there...<br />

<h2>
The Street Art in Chichester</h2>
<br />
You can find out more about the street art by googling it, but this will give you a <a href="http://www.chichesterbid.co.uk/blog/entry/chichester-street-art-festival" target="_blank">taster</a>.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Behind the auction house in Baffins Lane is a large scale depiction of two blue tits. It is by ROA, a street artist from Belgium. It is one of my favourites.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VetgOf4_viU/Uc89BEVFzqI/AAAAAAAAAhU/jr6eWLTz0RE/s1600/P1040108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VetgOf4_viU/Uc89BEVFzqI/AAAAAAAAAhU/jr6eWLTz0RE/s320/P1040108.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(There is a paint spill under the bird's tail that looks like it had a poop. Teeheehee...)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Just to the left of it is a sweet owl by Dscreet, who is from London. The little owl looks cute but at the same time a bit dangerous (sharp tallons, spikey hair and spooky eyes). I like him too. He is on the gate off Baffins Car Park. Michael Wooley, the ex mayor of Chichester required that his gate be painted as a part of the Street Art Festival as he is a great supporter of the project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5NEqsDqUV_w/Uc89-lk9DII/AAAAAAAAAhk/8Hjs-ia1LBo/s1600/P1040119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5NEqsDqUV_w/Uc89-lk9DII/AAAAAAAAAhk/8Hjs-ia1LBo/s320/P1040119.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are 15 (supposed to be - I've only seen 2) Mushrooms in different spots all over the city. They are by Christiaan Nagel, as South African artist currently living in London. I am sorry, but they don't appeal to me...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one is in South Pallant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ygp8GceyVdM/Uc9BEC2DArI/AAAAAAAAAh0/2MwE8DPdSD4/s1600/P1040125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ygp8GceyVdM/Uc9BEC2DArI/AAAAAAAAAh0/2MwE8DPdSD4/s320/P1040125.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A bit further up the road, in North Pallant, is another of my favourite art pieces. Very minimalistic but so expressive!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d7GiJdKlhTU/Uc9Cwwt1XZI/AAAAAAAAAiE/eI0xFZADL2s/s1600/P1040134.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d7GiJdKlhTU/Uc9Cwwt1XZI/AAAAAAAAAiE/eI0xFZADL2s/s320/P1040134.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one is by STIK, an artist from London. This is what the brochure says: "Stik, who having spent many years homeless and working on the streets, knows the city from the inside and manage to reach seemingly superhuman locations to paint these highly stylized pieces. These days Stik exhibits in the West End, liaises at Central Saint Martin's "Graffiti Dialogues" with police and councils and is funded to run graffiti workshops by councils and schools. The artist also works with groups as diverse as Amnesty International, Reclaim the streets, Queeruption, Mutoid Waste Company and British Waterways and yet still regularly paints unauthorised pieces around the capital, underlining Stik's status as a key component of both underground and mainstream art scene." So there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In North Street, on the side of a house, is a fairy tale-like, reminiscent of Fantastic Mr Fox, painting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_5PN2lozU0/Uc9EoBmX87I/AAAAAAAAAiU/6hk-wd9GJjg/s1600/P1040140.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7_5PN2lozU0/Uc9EoBmX87I/AAAAAAAAAiU/6hk-wd9GJjg/s320/P1040140.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The artist is Hitnes (from Jean Spezial from Paris, according to the brochure).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a rather dangerous dash across the fire station/Metro House roundabout, there are four more art pieces. Unfortunately they are rather difficult to photograph as they are either obscured by trees or another building.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-26EVoBaa-7g/Uc9FolylN2I/AAAAAAAAAik/bhggF5eXt6s/s1600/P1040149.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-26EVoBaa-7g/Uc9FolylN2I/AAAAAAAAAik/bhggF5eXt6s/s320/P1040149.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one is by Thieery Noir, a Frenchman from Berlin. He painted 18 kms of the Berlin Wall. When the city was divided, anyone who approached the Berlin Wall risked being arrested. Painting on the wall was definitely high risk, but in 1984 Thierry decided to transform the wall into a canvas and cover it in bright, vivid colours. He was the first artist to paint continuously, albeit illegally on the wall from 1984 until it came down in 1989. He is a forerunner of the modern street art movement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just above the Noir painting is the second Christiaan Nagel mushroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4a4H_fb3I40/Uc9MoT3VphI/AAAAAAAAAlY/E6qtcVW23ms/s1600/P1040150.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4a4H_fb3I40/Uc9MoT3VphI/AAAAAAAAAlY/E6qtcVW23ms/s320/P1040150.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just to the left on the side of the next building, is a rather surreal painting by Liqen, an artist from Spain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aB8wp18-Ebg/Uc9G9b6ugzI/AAAAAAAAAi0/B9T_9iH_dJ8/s1600/P1040155.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aB8wp18-Ebg/Uc9G9b6ugzI/AAAAAAAAAi0/B9T_9iH_dJ8/s320/P1040155.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Back to the right and past the Noir mural, we find the very clever 'skeleton' or puppet by Phlegm, who is from Sheffield in the UK. It is very unusual, but I quite like this painting.</div>

Petworth is a short drive away from us, but has an awful lot to offer. It is known as the 'antiques shoppers' paradise' as there are plenty of antique shops around. I am not really into that, but still find it awfully interesting to browse the windows for all sorts of authentic, old-fashioned bits and pieces. A walk around Petworth offers a lot of cute nooks and crannies too<br />
<br />
Let's start at the top of the town (well, what I consider the top of the town)... at Petworth House. I have never actually gone inside Petworth House and it is on my to do list. It is a 17th century country house and is set in Petworth Park. The entrance to the park is a short drive away and offers a fabulous (free) walk inside an enormous park, complete with deer. It is supposed to be landscaped by Capability Brown but to me it looks pretty natural. Shows my ignorance, I guess!<br />

The actual house is just on the outskirts of Petworth, but I've only ever seen the rather imposing gates.<br />

<br />
St Mary's Church is on the main road through Petworth, just a litte bit further up. It looks to me like a mish-mash of different building styles, almost like bits of the building were added at different times. I love the eclectic look of it!<br />

One of the clearest (and cutest) examples of windows tax can be found in a house on Petworth square. If you look at the photograph below, you'll see that some of the windows were blocked but painted to look like the windows are still there! The Cathedral in Arundel is a real treasure trove! There are many nooks and crannies to explore and lots of beautiful things to see. One overwhelming thought when in the cathedral is always how dedicated the worshippers must have been to build such a magnificent building!<br />
<br />
Let's start on the outside... There is a fabulous view of the castle and the cathedral on either side of the town as you approach Arundel, but unfortunately there is no place to stop and take a photo. The next best view is the one from the castle grounds.<br />

The cathedral is called St Philip Howard and the stained glass windows depict him and his wife. I cannot remember all the details of his life, but it has a lot to do with converting from Protestant to Catholic faith and being thrown into prison for it...<br />

I had another look at some of the photos that I have of the cathedral and decided that the Chichester Cathedral deserves a post of its own. There is an awful lot of history and story related to the cathedral (details of which I may or may not remember). I'll do my best...<br />

The entrance to the cathedral is the starting point of story-telling! The two outer doors and inner door (all made of glass) each has a metal cross on them so that when you into the cathedral through the doors, you see 3 crosses (referring to the crosses on Golgotha).<br />

On either side of the door is a stone carving. Traditionally it is gargoyles that are carved to depict the demons and evil spirits that flee from the holy building. The stone masons in Chichester must have a sense of humour, because the gargoyles at the side on the cathedral depict Chichester Bishops and the ones either side of the entrance door depict Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (quite modestly and decently and not as evil creatures).<br />

Inside the church, directly on the right handside, there is a 1970s stone font. The bishops throughout the ages have been committed to supporting the arts and commissioned a new font in the destinct 70s style. The Victorian font that was there before was replaced with the one below and ended up in the garden!<br />

There is a chapel in the cathedral where people of other faiths (or no faith!) can come and spend quiet time. I was quite surprised to find that there is such a tolerance, having grown up in a church where, if you did not belong to the 3 sister churches, you were considered to be part of a sect! Can only say that I much prefer the attitude to live together in harmony...<br />

There is an unusual medieval tomb in the cathedral, which depicts the husband and wife next to each other (nothing usual about that) but his right hand reaches out for the wife and holds her hand (which is very unusual as love and physical contact is not shown in gravestone carvings). There is also a poem called 'An Arundul Tomb' about the tomb. This is considered a very 'romantic grave', if there is ever such a thing!<br />

The two towers on either side of the entrance to the church were apparently derelict for quite a while and was rebuilt only relatively recently (late 1800s early 1900s). The ceilings are very ornately decorated.<br />

One's neck or balance cannot survive the looking directly above you for too long... For this purpose two little tables were made, containing a mirror, so that you can view the ceilings without falling over. Remember the little table next to the font? That was one of them!<br />

Arundel must be one of my favourite places around here. It has everything: a castle (with a Duke and his family still living in it), a cathedral, a lake and lots of little quirky things to see. In fact, I have so much to share about Arundel that I will probably not be able to do it all in one blog! The castle warrants it's own blog, as does the <a href="http://lindaintheuk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/arundel-cathedral.html" target="_blank">cathedral</a>!<br />

<b>The long walk</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Taking the road up the hill, past the cathedral, you cut across the park, past the folly, cross the tracks where the racehorses are exercised, climb over the style, walk along the gravel road (slightly longer) or slip-slide down the slope (slightly shorter) to get to the other end of the lake. Definitely the choice for the fitter amongst us, but also offers beautiful views and a bit of exercise to boot!<br />

This little village is one of the prettiest villages just around the corner from us! With loads of interesting places and stories, too.<br />
Just for clarification (because I always got it wrong in the beginning and the locals are fairly pernicular about the pronunciation of the name): it is pronounced like Bozzum and not like Bosh-ham!<br />
<br />
<h3>
Bosham Church</h3>
You can read a bit about the history of the church on the <a href="http://www.boshamchurch.org.uk/html/a_brief_history.html" target="_blank">church's website</a>.<br />

<br />
It is said that the knights of the old days, when they returned from the Holy Wars, landed at Bosham and their first stop would be at Bosham Church. It would be unheard of to bring a sharp sword into the church but equally unheard of to leave the swords outside. So they would blunt their swords on the doorposts of the church door. The crosses carved in the stone can still be clearly seen.<br />

<h3>
The Green</h3>
<div>
One of the most beautiful trees grows on the green in Bosham. The green overlooks the harbour (or I guess if you want to be technical it is a 'hoe' or another technical marine term. It is not quite the open sea and has lots of sail boats in it, so to me it is a harbour!) and makes for some lovely views and photos.</div>

An interesting thing about Bosham is that it has a road that floods each high tide. Yes, the water rises deep over the road and if you left your car there and forgot about the tide, you will find it floating in the Bosham Hoe! If you don't believe me, watch this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aPETwG5HyA" target="_blank">video</a>.</div>

</div>
It has been ages since I've 'blogged'... I thought this might be a chance to reminisce a bit about the lovely area that we live in. So I am slightly changing tack on my previous (and fortunately long forgotten) blogs.<br />
<br />
What is on offer in our lovely city of Chichester? Well, plenty!<br />
<br />
<h3>
The Cross</h3>
<div>
The main meeting point in Chi is The Cross. As Chi has 4 main roads (North, South, East and West) that cross each other more or less in the middle of Chi, it makes sense to meet there!</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-517vO85zL4s/US5t7erg6QI/AAAAAAAAAM4/QQFzEJC1okg/s1600/2006+09UK+MaPa+Chi+(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-517vO85zL4s/US5t7erg6QI/AAAAAAAAAM4/QQFzEJC1okg/s320/2006+09UK+MaPa+Chi+(1).jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Chichester Market Cross 2006</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
The Cross was built around 1501. Bishop Story paid £10 for the land it is built on. I have heard that he was fed up with the women of the city trading in the cathedral or on the grounds and built the cross to give them their own place to trade from.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
Chichester Cathredral</h3>
<div>
Read more about the Cathedral in the blog '<a href="http://lindaintheuk.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/chichester-cathedral.html" target="_blank">Chichester Cathedral</a>'.</div>
Every 'tour' of Chi I've taken friends and family on, have included the Cathedral!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Over the fields from Hunston</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Building work on the cathedral started in 1076 and it was only in 1108 that Bishop Luffa was able to dedicate the building.<br />
One thing that I find fascinating is that the spire had collapsed in 1861 and had to be rebuilt (completed in 1866).<br />
<br />
The cathedral is a real treasure trove. Many pieces of art have been commissioned over the years. Here are some...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Miserichords (choir stalls)<br />
